Real paper and pen work, a rare beast. Reminds me of Heavy Metal
This is a perfectly random find from DivArt, just popped up in my undiscovered feed this morning. It moves me in several ways. First, I love how he’s used square brush strokes to compose the smoke and fire. From a distance, it fools my eye into imagining it’s almost on fire, even though it’s static.
Next, the hammk has re-imagined an old idea. I dig the power armored paladin marching into the field with his vibrating polearm at the ready. It’s something that seems to draw on Games Workshop at its genesis while being an idea unto itself. This guy is not a space marine. He’s something different, perhaps more complicated and conflicted. He marches for justice or chivalry but eats at a round table.
Finally, his religious regalia runs throughout the gallery. Yes, there’s a whole collection. For the most part, it seems unique. It’s as if hammk is creating his own saints and zealots. It makes me want to write space opera.
Considering what I’ve been writing about of late, this one has some special significance to me. The short story “Ser Pan Comido,” which is in copy edit with the publisher, is largely about possibility shifting across space-time with the use of the Shadow Drive and the pilots who accomplish this feat while ensconced within a timeless volume known as Pinch Space.
During my pre-writing warm up I’ve been spending a lot of time browsing DivArt lately. Sometimes I’m looking for evocative images that transport me to the places I intend to write about. Others, I need some inspiration to seed a story idea for me. Today, however, the art mirrored the idea I’ve already written. How’s that for kismet in chaos?
Yes. Yes, you’re right. This could be so much fun to write. So much fun.
Some more DivArt browsing revealed this elf carving a wave face with a big moon in the background. This made me think of my good friend and brother from another Mother Tim (who incidentally makes that exact face when he is surfing) and makes me want to drop all this post-apocalypse stuff I’ve been working on for something that will stoke.
Happy Thursday nerds!
